The Rise of the Iced Latte

The Iced Latte Love is year-round!

The iced latte has solidified its spot as a year-round favourite, ranking as the 5th most popular beverage choice in coffee shops. According to the Allegra Project Café UK 2024 report, 43% of industry leaders believe iced coffee is in demand year-round. This growing demand is reflected in menus nationwide, with high-street chains increasingly offering iced coffee options regardless of the season.

Younger consumers, particularly Gen Z, are driving this trend, with weekly iced coffee consumption rising to 18% from 16% last year.

 

Iced Latte Flavour Favourites

Flavours in the market replicate consumers’ core flavour preferences across hot lattes: caramel, chocolate, and, more recently, pistachio, combined with other flavours or used on their own. Pistachio-flavoured beverages are rising and are projected to grow significantly by 2027. This versatile flavour is already making its mark in iced lattes on primary UK menus, including Caffè Nero, Blank Street, and Black Sheep Coffee, signalling its potential as a staple flavour in the coming years.

Dunkin’ ran with more adventurous iced latte flavours this season, bringing in the fruity favourites such as strawberry, mango, and cherry and tying into the trend of desserts into beverages with their cheesecake range. Blank Street also ran a classic take on strawberries and cream as an iced latte, which shows popular frappe flavours transitioning to iced coffees. As we can see from some of the US launches, fruity flavour profiles such as cherry and blueberry are continuing and being driven by viral trends on TikTok, with Nitro Bar’s Blueberry Coffee video reaching 5.5 million views.

Consumer Preferences are changing

Using oat milk instead of standard milk is becoming a popular iced latte customisation, even becoming the default option in some drinks, such as Starbucks’ Iced Brown Sugar Oat Shaken Espresso. The same is also seen with Oat Milk Iced Matcha being served as standard, for example, at Blank Street.

The iced drink trend continues, with Iced Chocolates and Matchas being added to menus, giving consumers who don’t enjoy coffee an alternative choice.
